Having no experience is something we all had at some point in time. Job searching without much work experience can be intimidating and frustrating, but you can make the process smoother with some hard work and effort to help you get your foot in the door.
Get real - many of the entry-level positions you might be applying for will not expect you to have a lot of experience. Embrace your experience level and use this as motivation to learn. Understand your strengths and highlight these traits rather than just skills. Sharing that you are a fast learner, motivated, reliable and are committed to personal growth will be valued by a potential employer.
Identify your current skills and skills gap - what job skills do you currently have? This could include digital, personal, communication, creative, problem-solving skills. Highlight these skills in your application. Also, take the time to identify where you might have skills gaps so you can determine what you need to learn to further develop.
Make time to learn – based on the above and knowing where you need to develop skills, take time to research, read blogs, do online courses, attend presentations and workshops. Include any courses or presentations in your CV or LinkedIn profile so a potential employer sees that you are serious education and further your career prospects.
Who do you know – do you know someone in the industry you want to work in that can mentor you give you advice and introduce you to some connections in the industry. Many opportunities come from who you know and many senior people are happy to help you when you are starting out
Sell yourself – you need to explain why would be good for the role you are applying for. What soft skills do you have? Why do you think you are the best fit for the role? Can you make a link between any informal and on the job expertise you have and how do these skills translate to this new role?
Be confident – showing you are confident in your abilities helps to build confidence in your potential employer also. with you. Show that you can do the job, but also show that you’re willing to learn.
Get experience – if you don’t have a real life on the job experience, make the effort to get some. You could do some volunteer work or an internship with 1 or 2 businesses in the industry you want to work. You will gain valuable experience, build your network, get a foot in the door and get new skills that will get you closer to your new role.
Network – online and offline networking allows you to connect with more of your potential employers. Building your personal network is a reliable path to a great job at any stage of life. You can connect offline at events and Meet Ups and online in social media groups and forum. Opportunities often come from who you know.
Be realistic - make sure you’re applying for positions that are appropriate for you. If you are a junior you’re not going to get a job as a director for example. It’s OK to stretch a little but you will annoy potential employers and recruiters if you a clearly nowhere near qualified
It is possible to win jobs without a much on the job experience but remember having a positive mindset and attitude goes a long way to help you achieve this goal.
